With Summer Just Around the Corner: What’s On Your Roof?

Chicago’s competitive downtown office market has building owners bending over backwards to attract tenants, with amenities from lunchtime restaurant shuttles to dorm-like social spaces where people from different companies can engage serendipitously.

And while apartment and condominium developers are increasingly cutting back on balconies, saying people don’t use or want them, office buildings across the city are sprouting roof decks like blackheads on a pizza delivery boy.

It’s goodbye green roof, hello party platform at the Citadel Center!

The latest building getting some communal outdoor space is the Citadel Center, at 131 South Dearborn Street.  Eight thousand square feet of green roof will be ripped out and replaced by a roof deck for the office workers below.  Chicago’s Department of Planning and Development approved the move back in March saying, “There was no minimum green roof requirement when the PD was passed in 2000 and the building will still maintain a minimum 50% green roof.”

Other notable recent roof decks include One Prudential Plaza, and the Wintrust Bank Building (231 South LaSalle Street).  Check out the photo gallery below to see what you’re missing, if you don’t work there.
